For all the same reasons that adults do! Pride, blindness, self-sufficiency, seeing hypocrisy in others, not to mention that their minds have been darkened and blinded by Satan and sin.

I think the main reason is that they either don't have the Holy Spirit because they're not believers in the first place, or they are Christians but resist Him.

The best thing I've found to do with apathetic teens is to push them a bit. Rather than just asking that they live a certain way, push them to do it. Once they actually try God's principles in their life and see that it actually works, they tend to become a bit more interested, then excited and ultimately passionate. Ask for wisdom to know how to push them toward obedience of God's Word.

Lost students have lived all their lives lost and have developed patterns that cannot be easily changed/fixed or removed. Even students who come to your programming we cannot expect them to change their ways in a matter of weeks or months. They have lived many years and have ben programmed that this is the way of life, and it takes many years to de-program them so to speak.

Many students believe what they believe because that is what they grew up knowing and are not always open to change or something different. We adults are like that to some degree as well. I believe I am who I am today because of my parents and the way I was brought up. Had I been brought up in a non-christian enviroment who knows where I would be today?

I believe there an age where its hard. They are so caught up into this world, living by the world standards. They think its the best way to live. I going through, "The Way of the master", They teach to persudae unbelivers, just as Jesus did. meaning Show them the sins they are making, and why its wrong. Cause they don't see it as being wrong. Great way is using the 10 commandments, but putting it where they will understand. Once teens, young adults get sucked up into this worlds, its really hard to reach, but with God all things are possiable. Reach them with God's word.

Two things that I can only think of.
-Pray for them.
- Be in their life constantly interact with them. Next time you do an errand, take them with you. Show them the light outside of church. I was hanging out with three of my students when we pulled up to a stop light and a homeless man was on the side. I said to my students that I always look at anyone and think it might be Jesus. So I gave the homeless man money. My students also gave money. But, what blew me away was hey Nick lets go get him something more than just money, lets get him a warm meal.

Like you said there are all kinds of reasons!! Still I think we need to focus on doing our part in being faithful to the gospel message, loving students, and ultimately letting God worry about the rest.

Sorry if that seems too simplistic. Being relevant, training our students, and all of that is really important. Still there will be some...many...who don't follow Jesus. Romans 3 seems pretty relevant to this question.
