Telling the youth your leaving
Unless God slams this door shut in our faces, I will be voted in at another church this coming Sunday. Therefore, I will be telling our youth that I am leaving this coming Sunday evening. Obviously I am going to be completely honest and straight-forward with them, but what kind of advice does anyone have for me as far as things to definitely include or definitely NOT include in this conversation. THANKS!!

Consider including a lot of Q&A time in the discussion to help the students process the loss. But think through first if there are any questions you wouldn't want to answer so that you'll know how to respond if they come up. A few years ago I was volunteering in a ministry where the youth pastor left. During his message he addressed each student one at a time and said something encouraging to each of them and gave them each a unique challenge about how to step up for in their faith during the transition. It was really cool and I think it was really empowering to the teens present. Something to think about, perhaps. |

One of the most important things to remember, is the importance of ending well. No matter how you say it, you will want to communicate that you support the vision and direction of the church that you are leaving, and the fact that God is calling you elsewhere in ministry. I hope that you have been building into capable leaders who will be able to take over while the church starts the process of looking for a new youth pastor. |
