I'm guessing that as a teacher you likely have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent, many Christian universities offer a 1 year certificate that is treated like an add-on to an existing degree. This will help you get a stronger theological background that is a great asset to have in youth ministry.

There's plenty of great advice below and I second each point already made. Some good books to read would be "Sustainable Youth Ministry" by Mark DeVries, "Your first two years in youth ministry" by Doug Fields and "Divine Commodity" by Skye Jethani. The last one isn't specific to youth ministry, but shaped my view of ministry in general a great deal.

Thank you! I plan on pursuing some sort of seminary.

I don't know how much more prep you can do... when the opportunity arises, I believe God opened that door because you are prepared. One piece of advice: Connect with others doing what you do. Be open to grow from what they are doing right and/or wrong. Read a lot... growth is your most important tool next to surrender. In my opinion, student ministry is one of the most rewarding ministries in the church - enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the advice. I know God had me teaching for 12 years for a reason- just didn't know this would be it!
