I use joomla, cause it's free, and I liked Tim's website a couple years ago.

things I've used
blogger.com
wordpress.com
joomla.org
wordpress.org
typepad.com

I began blogging and that started my love for learning html and css. then I was free to move on to bigger things like ftp'ing and working with php and the like. It takes time and I would start small, until you figure out what your strengths are. Maybe a kid or other leader/adult could help you. You need to cast the vision for the website and then find the tools to accomplish the mission that comes from the vision.

Another thing you can do is go the blogger route. They have some templates there, but you can change them up. You can change the format as well. Link it with a Picasa account and you can have online picture albums. Link it with your own youtube channel and you can upload and embed your own videos. Announcements are simple blog entries.

I LOVE my blogger site. It's free and works quite nicely. I purchased my own domain name and have it set to point it to my blogger site -- it just redirects there immediately.

I would also encourage you to check out snapshotweb.com. They offer some amazing resources for a youth ministry website.

If you are creating your own, I recommend joomla as well, but that will take some learning if you don't know php.

I think a lot of it depends on your budget, your resources, your purpose for the site, and what you want to do on the site. There are many options available out there.

I have used yahoo for building my website in the past. Its a great way to start out for beginners. You can get ur own domain name through them and they also have a builder that makes it simple to put the page together.I believe they have site templates.another good thing is to check out what other youth ministries are doing.and you can get an idea on how to add certain things to your site that are free and are as easy as copy and pasting code. example would be tagboard. www.tag-board.com is a board you can put on your site so you can drop in messages to your kids or they can leave messages...and all it is just copy and paste...little things like that add neat and sometimes free interactivity

I would echo Tim's suggestions (Wordpress is a great blog platform), but even more simply, you could try creating a Facebook page/group. It's a great way to connect as a group.

If you just want something to inform of upcoming activities, etc., Wordpress is a great place to start. Another thing you might try is Google Sites (I haven't had any experience with it, but it looks pretty decent.) http://www.google.com/sites/

Also, if you have any tech-savvy students, see if they'd like to help build a site!
