"If it weren't for you, my son/daughter wouldn't be part of our church." Should this statement worry me?
A few parents, trying to be encouraging, have said this recently.
I guess, I love the fact that the students feel connected to me, but I worry they are coming for me, not for the church.

I agree with Steve. I'd be more apt to respond by saying "well then that's something we need to work on." I believe this kind of mindset has made us build ladders from children to youth to adult ministry instead of bridges. The problem with ladders is that once they're at the end, there's a huge drop-off. Use this family to help the church figure out ways to build bridges. |

You could use it as an opportunity to turn it around and encourage the parents. Research shows parents, especially moms, are the number 1 influence on a teens spiritual development. Most of the time teens and parents don't realize the long term impact parents have. Also don't forget the work the Holy Spirit is doing to grow these kids. Be glad your students love you and have a strong connection to you. But don't worry that they're only coming for you. Just do a great job while they're with you and know that is one part of many ways Gid is working on them. Okay, I shouldn't type on my phone! That last sentence should say "GOD is working on them" not Gid. :) |
